About Us

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga is a whānau-focused, Iwi mandated, kaupapa Māori health and social services organisation. We have been supporting our whānau me hapori to achieve their aspirations and general wellbeing for 40 years.  Underpinning our success as an organisation are our values Kotahitanga, Whakamana, Kaitiakitanga and Whanaungataunga, which are woven through everything we do.

About the Programme

Grounded in the principles of tuakana-teina, this mentorship-based initiative fosters reciprocal learning between experienced practitioners (tuakana) and emerging professionals (teina). You’ll be supported to grow your confidence and capability in a real-world social work setting, guided by the Te Ara Mātua framework.

As a Teina, you’ll gain:

  • Hands-on experience supporting tamariki and whānau.
  • Mentorship from experienced kaimahi.
  • Professional development through wānanga and reflective practice.
  • A culturally responsive environment that values your identity and journey.

What You’ll Be Part Of

You’ll contribute to outcomes that support tamariki and their whānau to:

  • Be safe, stable, and well cared for.
  • Stay connected to their whānau, hapū, and communities.
  • Access education, training, and employment.
  • Strengthen their identity and sense of belonging.
  • Navigate services and supports that enhance wellbeing.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who:

  • Is passionate about contributing to whānau wellbeing and support.
  • Has a strong connection to te ao Māori and a willingness to learn.
  • Is ready to step into a learning role with humility, curiosity, and commitment.
  • May be starting out in the social services space and looking for a supported pathway.
